White Salmon Lodge

Environmentally Integrated Design

The award winning White Salmon Day Lodge serves Mount Baker skiers and visitors with a full food service and spectacular views of Mt. Shuksan. The $2.5 million three story lodge was constructed with materials indigenous to the North Cascades such as hand-peeled timber logs, columnar basalt, cedar shakes and high-fired custom clay tiles.

An integrated wayfinding and signage system creatively adds interest and texture using custom tile faces and footprints of ten indigenous birds and animals. Copper salmon sculptures form part of the railings and stairways boast hand-carved animal newel posts, adding dimension and authenticity. These elements were significant contributions to fulfilling the United States Forest Service requirement that the lodge serve as an interpretive center for the North Cascade Wilderness area.

Project components include design and implementation management for:

  • Menus with copper faced dimensional letters
  • Copper salmon logos
  • Dimensional signage and wayfinding system
  • Custom animal tiles (not by HowMac)

Materials: Dimensional letters. copper, ceramic, vinyl graphics.
